Why do you run Oxford Science Adventures?
Oxford Science Adventures has two key aims. Firstly, to host fun activities that encourage children to be interested in science. The brain is one of the greatest mysteries of nature, and we think all children deserve to hear about how fascinating it is! Secondly, to facilitate developmental psychology projects. These projects can be difficult to carry out because they often involve visits to schools during term time, when schools and families are busy. Oxford Science Adventures brings a host of different developmental researchers together, making it more effective to carry out research in developmental psychology. Oxford Science Adventures is a fun family-friendly environment that can help us to answer current questions about the development of language and cognition.
Do I have to stay at the department while my child participates?
For health and safety reasons, we ask that parents remain at the department while your child does the activities. There will be tea and coffee available, and representatives from the department around to talk about some of the work being undertaken in developmental psychology.
I have more than one child. Can they both come?
Absolutely! Please let us know when you book a session that you would like to book two places for the same session.
Can I book more than one session?
No, the activities are repeated every session, so your child wouldn’t be doing any new activities, and we’d like to involve as many families as possible.
Is booking necessary or can I drop in at anytime during the week?
Booking is absolutely necessary as spaces are limited and we need to plan for the number of children in each year-group.
What happens to the data that’s collected?
The data collected from the experiments will be analysed, and written up for publication in scientific journals, or as part of students’ theses. All data will be anonymised. You are free to withdraw your child’s data at any time.
What if I booked a place but can no longer make it?
Please let us know as soon as possible if you can no longer make it so that we can offer the space to other interested families.
Is there parking nearby?
Parking in central Oxford is limited, so we suggest that you use public transport or use the Park and Ride service, where possible. There is pay-and-display parking (£5 for 3 hours) in Mansfield Road, just around the corner from the department.
If you have additional questions please email [email protected] or call 01865 271 442.
